THE MOVEMENT
Welcome to the Student Christian Movement of India (SCMI), an esteemed youth ecumenical organization established in 1912, making it the oldest among university students in India. Approaching our 111th year, our unwavering commitment to nurturing a Christian community of students, staff advisors, and senior friends is our priority.
SCMI is grounded in Christian principles, our movement translates faith into action by contemporizing our understanding of Jesus Christ and discerning the signs of the times. Spanning 15 geographical regions, SCMI inspires students across generations, regions, and languages to actively reshape both the Church and society.
Rooted in the historic ‘All India Student Conference’ in 1912, held in Serampore under John R. Mott’s guidance, SCMI was born, converging the efforts of inter-collegiate YMCA.
Our primary mission is to fortify members’ faith in Jesus Christ and empower them for leadership roles in the University, Church, and Society. While not formally affiliated with any specific church, SCMI collaborates with churches through programs and projects. As a full member of the National Council of the Churches in India (NCCI) and the Youth Committee of the NCC, SCMI organizes joint initiatives as needed.
We take pride in instilling values of ecumenism, unity, peace, and justice, nurturing young leaders characterized by integrity and commitment. SCMI embraces inclusive partnerships with diverse church traditions, individuals of all faiths, and various social, economic, and political expressions, collaborating with youth ecumenical organizations like YWCA, YMCA, AICUF, and more. Our affiliation with the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF) solidifies global connections, promoting mutual solidarity and networking.
SCMI invites you to join our enriching journey of faith, action, and community, upholding the legacy for generations to come. Explore fellowship, group dynamics, and immersive encounters with marginalized communities, and engage in learning opportunities through biblical reflection, social analysis, and cultural action.
Join us in continuing the legacy of SCMI.
