National Office and Desk Concerns
The SCM of India’s national office and its program center are located in Bangalore. Students can use the center, which has a library, a conference hall, and lodging for up to 60 people.
The various desks at the national office include:
- Faith, Formation, and Praxis Desk:Â Based on the biblical passage from James 2:17, this desk emphasizes faith-driven actions. It highlights the importance of balancing action and reflection. The desk facilitates interfaith worship services, dialogue platforms, Bible studies on relevant themes, and hands-on experiences for contextual analysis and unconventional learning.
- Human Rights Desk:Â This desk integrates human rights education into student discussions, encouraging young people to think critically and act justly. It focuses on human rights issues within political, social, and economic contexts, helping students understand the complex realities of the world today. The desk advocates for human rights, equipping students to speak out against injustice and stand in solidarity with the oppressed. By organizing various human rights programs at both regional and national levels, the desk provides students with platforms to engage, learn, and collaborate. Additionally, it initiates focused campaigns to build awareness and strengthen advocacy. Through these initiatives, the Human Rights Desk inspires students to become prophetic voices, challenging injustice and working toward a more inclusive and equitable society.
- Gender and Social Justice Desk:Â This desk works to help students deepen their understanding of gender, patriarchy, and caste and their interactions with social structures. It upholds the rights of sexual and gender minorities and reflects on ways to build a gender-sensitive society. The desk facilitates seminars, workshops, lectures, and group discussions to help students analyze, reflect on, and challenge issues related to gender and social justice.
- Mission and Scholarship Desk:Â This desk aims to fulfill God’s mission through Christian values by standing in solidarity with and addressing the needs of underprivileged, oppressed, marginalized, and poor students (Dalit/Adivasi and Tribal) who are often most afflicted by the education system. The desk seeks to help students understand God’s mission of an inclusive community through educational initiatives. These initiatives help students become aware of discrimination in their environment and empower them to become change-makers in society. This desk initiates, facilitates, and coordinates programs through expressions like the Fellowship Project, Faith & Spirituality, Worship & Liturgy, Dialogue & Peace, Ecumenism, and Science & Technology. The desk’s primary focus is the Fellowship Project, titled “Transforming Communities: SCMI Fellowship Programme for Dalits and Adivasis,” which provides students from these communities with scholarships for English and computer courses, leadership training camps, perspective sharing, and capacity building for mentors and staff advisors.
- Communication Desk:Â This desk serves as the SCM of India’s portal to the outside world, showcasing the movement’s ethos and activities. It keeps the student body informed about current events and regularly publishes content online and on social media to stay current with a rapidly changing world. It supports the movement’s growth by engaging students. The desk’s duties and functions include publication, documentation (collecting membership and contact details), art and literature, movement-building activities, networking, and upskilling.
